Chapter 5

What three new things did I learn?
  • The use of different applications in the classroom such as practice in grammar, spelling, and communication, methods of reporting research findings, and opportunities for creative work could possibly help benefit students in different ways such as higher self-esteem and a heightened interest in what they are working on.
  • Test generators that has several advantages such as test creation and revision procedures, random generation of questions, selection of questions based on criteria, answer keys, and test item banks that could be helpful to teachers in the classroom and allowing them extra time.
  • IEP, Individualized Education Program, that allows teachers to print out an IEP in standard format after entering the required components.
What two things could I implement into the classroom?
  • I would like to implement the use of worksheet and puzzle generators. Definitely the puzzle generators for use as a crossword to learn vocab.

What one thing would I like to learn more about?

  • The difference between desktop publishing vs. desktop publishing software.

Where's the Beef?

What Three New Things Did I Learn?
  • Where's the Beef is the main point of the article; the students are creating technological assignments but are not including what they learned. I learned what 'Where's the Beef' means and teachers need to be aware of using technology in the classroom, but using it in matter that allows for students to learn more about the subject and not just for the students motivation.
  • There are three ways to approach assigning students an assignment and using technology with said assignment: types of communication-how you want the student to inform of said topic, mode of their content-the packaging of topic i.e. creating a graphic novel, and selecting the digital tool to deliver their message- i.e. podcast. Knowing this information allows teachers to be aware more of the message the student is trying to achieve, if any, and not be taken in by the glitz of the technology.
  • The final thing I learned about is the nine scoring traits for digital products; however, since they only touch base and reference a website for one to look at, I fully didn't learn in-depth about the scoring traits just what the names are but not what they mean.
What Two Things Could I Apply to My Own Teaching?
  • To be aware of the beef in the students work and not be taken in by the students' glitz of technology.
  • Along those lines the article mentions that if you want to have your students use a type of technology become savvy with it yourself before giving your students the option of doing so.
One Thing I Would Like to Learn More About?
  • I would like to explore the scoring rate for digital products.
  • Website for trait scoring: www.digitales.us/evaluating/scoring_guide.php

Chapter 2

What three new things did I learn?
  • According to Atkinson and Shiffrin, the brain contains three different forms of memory.
  • Gagne's nine events of instruction
  • The views of directed instruction or objectivism vs. constructivist or inquiry-based learning.
What two connections did I learn for my own teaching?
  • The possible use of Gagne's nine events of instruction.
  • The use of a rubric in the classroom.
What one question do I have about the reading?
  • How can I use the TIP phases as an added advantage in my own classroom?

Chapter 3

What three new things did I learn?
  1. The different types of instructional software and possible applications.
  2. Guidelines for directed teaching and constructivist strategies.
  3. The benefits of tutorials.
What two connections did I learn for my own teaching?
  1. How to apply the guidelines off directed teaching into my classroom.
  2. The possible use of Integrated learning systems in my classroom.
What one question do I have about the reading?
  1. How to apply the different types of instructional software into a high school English classroom?

Chapter 1

What three new things did I learn?
*That there are three different "computer" eras: pre-microcomputer, microcomputer, and Internet.
*When technology works best in the classroom setting. i.e. provides students opportunities to collaborate.
*The merging of technologies is a trend in software/hardware development.
What two connections relate to my own teaching?
*The variety of ways I could use it in my own classroom setting. i.e. student motivation, calculating a student's grade, and/or accessing information elsewhere
*Need for a flexible learning environment.
One question I have about the material?
*More information regarding 'cybercheating'

The Seed School

During 60 minutes a story was done on "The Seed School." The Seed School was created by two men wanting kids from low economic classes to have the same opportunity as upper class students in college prep or private schools. Students are selected through a lottery starting at 6th grade. The students that are selected will be here until graduation. The students live in a dorm style community: no TV, cell phones, and personal computers are allowed. Students start the day at 6a.m. for breakfast, health enhancement, etc... Classes start at 8a.m. and end at 4p.m. 97 percent of students graduate from this school and 94 percent of the students become college graduates. There are only two schools both on the east coast that are open due to the low amount of money available to open them.
