Chapter 15

3 new things

  • I learned the difference between what an impairment, disability, and handicap. I thought that they were one in the same.
  • I learned that special education technology has been a part of the U.S. educational system since 1879 when a donation was made produce Braille materials and in 1958 when funding was given for adding captioning to films for the deaf. I hope that this keep improving.
  • What the difference between assistive and instructional technology and what different purposes they use in the class.

2 things I would use
  • The software available for reading and writing skills

1 more thing I would like to learn more about
  • Universal Designs-curb cuts...

chapter 4

3 new things

  • "At one time, creating and searching databases was a popular strategy for teaching students organization, research, and study skills and for demonstrating how information is organized to serve various important functions in our society" (pg. 113, Edu Tech)

  • What Open-source software is...source code is avaible in the public domain i.e. Open Office

  • Max's Toolbox that you could use with younger or students who have trouble understanding Mircrosoft Office

2 things in class

  • Microsoft Office programs: word, excel, powerpoint... when using word I will stress to my students to use RTF format, excel I will use for grades and notes for students and parents, powerpoint I would use for lectures and allow my students to use as a presentation tool.

1 more thing

  • How to apply teaching the keyboard in class without making it into a typing class. I find knowing the keyboard is important to students. It was one of the best things I did for myself in highschool.

Chapter 13

Three things I learned...

Robinson and Roland's four reasons for linking the goals of a school arts program with rapidly developing instructional technologies: expanded modes of expression, literacies for the Information Age, creative approaches to modern problems, and arts as aesthetic balance.

The use of programs such as Hyperscore, that allows student not to know how to read sheet music.

The five challenges of meeting standards in Art instruction

Two things I would use...

MIDI for older students who know how to read note music and Hyperscore for younger students to excite them about music

One thing to learn more about
ethical issues surrounding art images

Classroom Assessment: Minute by Minute, Day by Day

Three new things I learned
  • That Paul Black and Dylan Williams found that students taught by teachers who used assessment in the classroom learned faster, six to seven months compared to a year.
  • Five broad strategies and the different suggestions under each of the in-depth categories: i.e. Engineer Effective Classroom Discussion-use of dry erase boards.
  • The hinge question-the question asked midway through the unit or lesson to gauge where the students are.
Two Things I could use in the classroom
  • I would use the different techniques applied in Engineer Effective Classroom Discussion to gauge my students and to also involve all of my students.
  • Implore the Provide Feedback That Moves Learners Forward by giving feedback but no grades.
One thing I would like to learn more about
  1. The feedback instead of grades idea. At the end of that section it states that the teacher had to have permission to do that, but I did not understand why.

Chapter 12

Three things I learned...

  1. The ten methods, themes, of addressing social studies instruction standards: culture, times, continuity, and change, people, places, and environment, individual development and identity, individuals, groups, and institutions, power, authority, and governance, production, distribution, and consumption, science, technology, and society, global connections, and civic ideals and practices.
  2. The “history wars” the debate of what to teach the students whether it is the events that shaped the U.S., a generalized approach to history and civics instead of a broader approach covering a number of topics, or outside influences. This fifth edition states that critics feel that teachers who are not well prepared in the broad array of influences that have shaped our country’s history will be ill equipped to teach history effectively.
  3. Dilemmas in teaching social studies: the amount of material covered, changing role of technology, social studies sometimes gets put on the back burned due to “teaching to the standardized test”, and the issue of cost.
Two things I would use in my classroom...
  1. The ten themes mentioned in methods of addressing social studies instruction standards being used in my classroom.
  2. I will use technology integration in my classroom especially the use virtual trips.
One thing I would like to learn more on...
  • To learn more on the history wars.

Chapter 11

What three new things have I learned?
  1. What is and how the use of a virtual manipulative would be beneficial to teachers trying to have their students problems solve or help visualize what they are working on.
  2. The results of the Praxis II test: “that elementary education candidates have much lower math and verbal scores than other college graduates do.” (pg. 328)
  3. What the four integration strategies for science are: supporting authentic science experiences, supporting scientific inquiry skills, supporting sciecn concept learning, accessing science information and tools.
Two things I would integrate into my classroom...
  1. If I was a math teacher I feel that the use of virtual manipulatives would be great for my students since most students are visual and kinetic learners anymore.
  2. The use computer software and calculators.
One thing I would like to learn more on...
  • I would like to learn more about the Praxis exam results to compare and contrast various data.

Chapter 10

What are 3 new things...
  1. The common problems in ESL teaching and Learning: Developing academic language and background knowledge, differentiating instruction, and integrating the students' native languages. Along the line of differentiating instruction I like the idea of the software program that can assist in tracking an individual and offer ways for the student to work alone.
  2. Common Problems in foreign language programs are authentic materials, authentic perspectives, and creating audience and purpose. Under authentic materials, authentic perspectives it talks of WBLL (web-based language learning) to help students navigate faster to relevant websites.
  3. Last but not least, computer-assisted language learning (CALL) for students to enhance their speaking and listening skills.
What two things would I integrate...
  1. Support systems
    1. Language Labs, if school had proper funding
    2. Podcasts or Radio broadcasts for students to listen and speak
What is one thing I would like to learn more about...
  • More and efficient ways to correct the problems in ESL teaching and learning...
