Chapter 12

Three things I learned...

  1. The ten methods, themes, of addressing social studies instruction standards: culture, times, continuity, and change, people, places, and environment, individual development and identity, individuals, groups, and institutions, power, authority, and governance, production, distribution, and consumption, science, technology, and society, global connections, and civic ideals and practices.
  2. The “history wars” the debate of what to teach the students whether it is the events that shaped the U.S., a generalized approach to history and civics instead of a broader approach covering a number of topics, or outside influences. This fifth edition states that critics feel that teachers who are not well prepared in the broad array of influences that have shaped our country’s history will be ill equipped to teach history effectively.
  3. Dilemmas in teaching social studies: the amount of material covered, changing role of technology, social studies sometimes gets put on the back burned due to “teaching to the standardized test”, and the issue of cost.
Two things I would use in my classroom...
  1. The ten themes mentioned in methods of addressing social studies instruction standards being used in my classroom.
  2. I will use technology integration in my classroom especially the use virtual trips.
One thing I would like to learn more on...
  • To learn more on the history wars.

Chapter 11

What three new things have I learned?
  1. What is and how the use of a virtual manipulative would be beneficial to teachers trying to have their students problems solve or help visualize what they are working on.
  2. The results of the Praxis II test: “that elementary education candidates have much lower math and verbal scores than other college graduates do.” (pg. 328)
  3. What the four integration strategies for science are: supporting authentic science experiences, supporting scientific inquiry skills, supporting sciecn concept learning, accessing science information and tools.
Two things I would integrate into my classroom...
  1. If I was a math teacher I feel that the use of virtual manipulatives would be great for my students since most students are visual and kinetic learners anymore.
  2. The use computer software and calculators.
One thing I would like to learn more on...
  • I would like to learn more about the Praxis exam results to compare and contrast various data.

Chapter 10

What are 3 new things...
  1. The common problems in ESL teaching and Learning: Developing academic language and background knowledge, differentiating instruction, and integrating the students' native languages. Along the line of differentiating instruction I like the idea of the software program that can assist in tracking an individual and offer ways for the student to work alone.
  2. Common Problems in foreign language programs are authentic materials, authentic perspectives, and creating audience and purpose. Under authentic materials, authentic perspectives it talks of WBLL (web-based language learning) to help students navigate faster to relevant websites.
  3. Last but not least, computer-assisted language learning (CALL) for students to enhance their speaking and listening skills.
What two things would I integrate...
  1. Support systems
    1. Language Labs, if school had proper funding
    2. Podcasts or Radio broadcasts for students to listen and speak
What is one thing I would like to learn more about...
  • More and efficient ways to correct the problems in ESL teaching and learning...

Chapter 9

What are 3 things I learned...
  1. That the typical home keyboard is referred to as QWERTY because of the keys at the top of it...also surrounding the topic of the keyboard is the differences in learning to use the keyboard: that its a waste of time or that it would be beneficial, but there is a compromise if they have time they will implement it. I took a typing class in high school best thing I ever done.
  2. The six ideas or visions that students have a right too, according to the IRA. Unfortunately, the money that is recommended to be spent on technology education is 30% of the budget; however, only 6% is being used.
  3. The three language arts areas that integration strategies are being applied too: language skills development, literacy development, and process writing approach.
What are 2 things to integrate...
  1. Video project relating to a book we are reading
  2. Concept mapping tools for writing
What is one thing I would learn more about...
  • This chapter in general...As a future language arts teacher I would like to know more ways to implement technology into my classroom.

Chapter 8

The three new things I learned
  1. How the effects of "tellecollaborations" have improved and the three general applications of web-based lessons and projects: interpersonal exchanges, information collection and analysis, and problem solving.
  2. The developer VRLM that develops and displays 3-D objects and PERL that allows the user to write common gateway interface.
  3. The stepping stones of the website developing sequence.

The two things I could use in the classroom

  1. The stepping stones of the webiste developing sequence. Letting the kids follow this sequence like a checklist to see if they need or not need to include information on the website.
  2. Different web-based lesson and or projects i.e. electronic field trips and/ or electronic pen pals

The one things I would like to learn more about

  1. How to CREATE my own website...

Chapter 7

What three new things did I learn?
I learned the difference between the internet and the world wide web. I was one of those people who thought the world wide web was the internet and visa versa. I am still somewhat hazy, but I believe I get that the internet is the foundation of the world wide web and that the world wide web is the structure. I don't know if that is the greatest metaphor, but that is how I see it.
I also learned the top five errors in URLs...I have done each one of the errors listed on page 212. It is useful to know the top five errors if one of my student's misspells a word or forgets an underscore, I can now point them out.
And last but not least I learned that content and design of the website is also important in evaluating it for information. The student may have a hard time navigating the design and the content of the website may not have been updated since 1998. Something to aware of when student's are researching information.

What two things could I implement in my classroom.
The first thing is the world wide web to research information and also to use the classroom blog. The blog for this class would be my third blog these past years. I find them rather frustrating, but also knowing that the future generation, I will be educating, is social. I feel that having a classroom blog that students can write thoughts and feelings of the week's lessons and or share other information pertaining to classroom lessons.

What is one thing I could learn more about?
I would like to learn how to use chat-rooms, Instant messaging, and videoconferencing in an highschool English classroom.
