Three things I learned...
- The ten methods, themes, of addressing social studies instruction standards: culture, times, continuity, and change, people, places, and environment, individual development and identity, individuals, groups, and institutions, power, authority, and governance, production, distribution, and consumption, science, technology, and society, global connections, and civic ideals and practices.
- The “history wars” the debate of what to teach the students whether it is the events that shaped the U.S., a generalized approach to history and civics instead of a broader approach covering a number of topics, or outside influences. This fifth edition states that critics feel that teachers who are not well prepared in the broad array of influences that have shaped our country’s history will be ill equipped to teach history effectively.
- Dilemmas in teaching social studies: the amount of material covered, changing role of technology, social studies sometimes gets put on the back burned due to “teaching to the standardized test”, and the issue of cost.
- The ten themes mentioned in methods of addressing social studies instruction standards being used in my classroom.
- I will use technology integration in my classroom especially the use virtual trips.
- To learn more on the history wars.
